I also use Nikon (D200) with whatever lens I need. I don't find altitude a problem but if you change the lenses often you get dirt on the sensor which is a pain. We flower photographers are often photographing with pollen all round so our environment is dirty for an SLR.
The Nikon D200 is a robust camera and I have dropped it down hillside in its bag with no ill effects. I carry 3 batteries and use an 8Gb card holding capable of holding 899 high quality images.
It's heavy kit but I wouldn't go back to compacts now.
