One wonders endlessly about bluebells. What did 'nutans' mean? That was the name when I started botanising as a child. 'Non-scripta' seems to mean 'not written about': apt, given that our bluebell woods are not alluded to by, for example, Shakespeare. Does one conclude that they only came into being when the practice of coppicing was adopted, two or three hundred years ago? Does anyone know the earliest mention of bluebell woods? Please?
