I'm still learning how to use it fully, but my flower shots, even with the macro setting and auto focus, are so much better than before. I really would recommend a digital SLR if you are going to be photographing a lot of small stuff. They aren't that expensive anymore, and you can pick some up 2nd hand online quite cheaply, especially just after a new version of something comes out. For example the Nikon D40 is cheap at the moment as the D40X has recently come out.

I have previously used a Nikon coolpix 5700 which is a compact, for flower photography and Peter is 100% correct about the contrast problem with green subjects.
It was a great camera for a lot of things, and I do still use it, but it was a complete pain when trying to photograph a small item against a similar coloured background. I used to try the trick with the contrasting coloured card to get the focus, then remove the card, which works up to a point, but isn't satisfactory.
