The so-called macro lenses needed for close-up photography will take an ordinary photo as well it's just that the field of view is narrower than you might choose. I would still point out that compacts are very difficult to use for green subjects. They rely on the photographer using Auto focus which in turn needs contrast between the subject and the background.

Tim's right about changing lenses in the field you can easily get dust and pollen on the mirrors etc.
