Bryonia cretica

Can you please help me understand the scientific naming for White Bryony? Bryonia dioica Jacq.; Bryonia cretica ssp. dioicia (Jacq.) Tutin Am I right in thinking that this is the same plant, just named differently by different people? Is so, what does 'ssp' stand for? Thanks Ron
