I was very critical of the plan at Madera speedway with the combined commercial project that was added to the State fairgrounds. I spoke with many government representatives on the project from State Senators to the Mayor, to the Fairgrounds CEO, and wrote a number of articles against the plan. The racetrack was indeed in danger of closing if it didn't become profitable. (it was me and maybe 200 fans the final points night of 2005 or 6) Also, I am not at all a fan of State land sold or leased to developers either.
But when I'm wrong, I'm wrong. The speedway does along just fine with Lowes and other commercial businesses on the property. In fact, they complement each other, well beyond my expectations. Traffic at the businesses helps our track, and the race track pushes traffic to the business as well. We all win.
Let's hope the OSS Board takes a good look at Madera and how that has worked out. (and why)
