I would appreciate someone explaining the authorship of Westside.
First there apparently was the book.
Then the Play and that is where the confusion comes in.
As most of us know--Lenny wrote the music--one of the great masterpieces of the late 20th century.
However, Stephen Sonheim (now 79 years old) suppose to have written the lyrics. Just what does this mean. Why could not the authors of the play have written them?
So does this mean Sonheim contributed music with words (lyrics) to Westside? Or he just turned some words of the playrights into musical meter (not poetry) to match Bernstein's music?
If anyone has any contact with Sonheim--I would appreciate his contacting me privately as I have lost his email address and last saw him at his 75th birthday but did not think to ask.
Sonheim is quiet a composer in his own right.
