Posted by Ken No, you don't retract the whipping punch. It rotates from the elbow. No, I could go from a high to low with inside whip motion. Ken --Previous Message--

Yes, with the exception of centerline punch, palm or front kick everything the wing chun practioner would do would be reacting to what they feel from the enemy.
: So what you're saying is that the whipping
: punch isn't proactive but reactive,it doesn't
: attack...it counters.do you retract your fist
: before using the whipping punch?and by how
: much?Is it only performed from a low position
: to a high position?

: The differences between the punches allow us
: to
: return to the centerline when the centerline
: has been blocked. Quick examples could be
: (but not limited to) if the enemy blocks my
: punch in a downward/inside direction, I can
: use inside whip to come back around to hit.
: If the enemy blocks my punch in a
: downward/outside direction I can use outside
: whip to come back and attack the centerline.
: If I punch with my right hand and it gets
: blocked on the outside of my arm I can use
: outside diagnal to attack the centerline. If
: I punch with my right and now the centerline
: is not clear for me to continue with another
: centerline punch I can continue to attack the
: centerline use inside diagonal to attack from
: a different angle.

: I just read an article describing "the
: eight punches of wing chun" and I'djust
: like to know the difference between the
: whipping punches and the diagonal punches
: since they both go off the central line then
: return toit forthe strike....
