When you got back to a rear or camp area, a few guys would break cherished items out of their duffle bags. One I recall was a vest made by Mama San out of a poncho liner. It read "When I die I'm going to heaven because I already spent my time in Hell... Vietnam". I always thought that was amusing.
I thought it would have read better as "When I die I'm going to Hell, because I already had my basic training for it...Vietnam".
Speaking of Heaven and Hell, all these calamities of late remind me of a sermon I heard in church about 40 years ago. Funny I should recall it but it had a few interesting points.
The sermon was on the end times and the signs thereof.
He said one would be ten kingdoms of (ancient) Europe would unite under one coin. I didn't know what that meant at the time but I guess maybe the Eurodollar? Another was earthquakes in divers (diverse, many) places. The changing weather, wonders in the heavens and some others which I forget.
If I recall these were visions by a prophet. To a man of that many thousand years ago, I bet space shuttle launches and men on the moon were "wonders in the heavens".
Of course many are more aware of these things than I and I'm sure I didn't quote the Pastor correctly but...
At a time when they throw the Ten Commandments out of our courtrooms and want to remove the word God from the pledge of allegiance one might consider breaking out that old Vietnam vest and reconsidering it's inscription.
Before anyone gets mad, let me say this is my attempt at humor, warped as it is.
