This year I went to the local Memorial Day Parade. It had the usual high school beauty queens in convertables, the baton twirlers, police , firemen and other notable people. After the end of the street parade I wandered over to the Memorial Service. There were various speakers, a few VFW types, local politicians. The keynote speaker was a high school senior. He belonged to about twenty organizations, was an honor this ,an honor that. He was one of those pudgy guys that you had to run circles around in basic because he couldn't keep up with the others . Not to worry though ,that overachiever will never see basic training. He already has plans for his college scholarship and major/minor.
He gave a fifteen minute speech and rambled on distinctively about things he knew nothing about. About why men die in war and what it's all about.Undoubtably he had done some reading , it's likely the books he's read were written by other wiz kids that don't know of what they speak. After his speech there were many comments from people about how great it was. These comments were from people that never served their country either.I myself wondered in amazement at the absurdity of it all. I suppose he will be a politician some day and make great speeches, all will be impressed, those that don't know any better at least. The point of all this is not to judge the speaker but to point out how enamored we are with educational achievement even to the point we allow people to speak with authority that know nothing. McNamara all the way to Condi Rice. Wiz kids, give us a break America , elect people that actually had to work for a living ask them to appoint people that actually "know" things rather than read them in a book. At least let our speakers at Memorial Day Ceremonies know something of what they speak.
