LOST A VETS SHRAPNEL-How do I tell him?

I lost a vietnam vets shrapnel that was recently removed. It was given to me to make it into a piece of jewelry. I LOST it. I won't go into the details, but needless to say I am sick about it and I just don't know how to tell him. Any vets out there with any advice? He is a close friend and I want to be honest and respectful of his "attachment" to it.
