Posted by David on 11/16/2006, 11:49 pm Dear Sir, I have long believed that God has given me a great gift by allowing me to be born in this great country, and I wish to use that gift to its fullest potential. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, I was shocked and angry that America could be attacked like that. I wanted to do something about it, and five years later I am still determined to do so. I feel it is my duty to stand up and protect my country when She is in danger. Others have the right, according to their circumstances, to remain at ease in American civilian life. But I feel the responsibility to be worthy of the gift of freedom which is my right because others have served in the military before me. I don’t want to be someone who only takes the spoils of freedom; I want to be someone who has earned his freedom through hard work and service to something greater than himself. I wish to serve my country in a way that tests my patriotism and my endurance, a way that will show how much I love my country; and I feel that way is the military. It is the military that has kept America free for the past 200 years; it is the military that must shoulder the burden and responsibility of defending America when threats arise; and it is the military that must make the sacrifices, sometimes the ultimate sacrifice, so that the people of America need not. I wish to be one of those individuals; someone who is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice so that his native land and its people stay safe. It is easy for people to remain civilians. Only people who think for themselves will step forward into military service. I think for myself, and because of that I undertake to be obedient and respectful to those in authority. I wholeheartedly believe in the ideals of a soldier; honor, duty, leadership, courage, and sacrifice. My family has a proud history of service in the military. My great-grandfather served in World War I, my grandfathers both served in World War II, and my father served in Vietnam. I want to be a part of that history and thus, I humbly and respectfully request that you sign the waiver which will allow me to serve my country in the Arkansas Army National Guard.

I've left out some parts because they contain information I'd rather not talk about, but overall, does it look good?
I am writing this letter to explain why I wish to serve my country in the United States Army National Guard. I am also writing this to firmly state my confidence that I am fit and able to serve in the Armed forces.
