I just wanted to relay a little experience I had yesterday. I usually do my runs ridiculously early in the morning so yesterday I had a rare opportunity to run in Paoli/Malvern around 3pm while the sun was out. While I was out, I encountered 5-6 other runners doing the same thing. Some of them were running with music, some were not. I noticed that in every single instance, when someone was ahead of me without headphones, as I came up behind them (ok so I run a little faster than most of the folks who were out yesterday), by the time I was within 10 feet or so of them, they heard me coming and turned around and acknowledged me. When I came up behind someone running with music, it wasn't until I was past them and in FRONT of them in their line of vision that they acknowledged me and often they jumped in surprise. Imagine if I had been a car instead of a runner!!! It was very obvious that the runners listening to their music were NOT engaged in their surroundings and therefore at a much greater risk for an accident. At least 2 of them were on the wrong side of the road to boot, which means a car would have been coming up right behind them which is super dangerous!!
So PLEASE, don't run roads with your iPod!!! Or if you MUST, take one of the earbuds out so you can have a chance to hear the sounds of cars, cyclists or other runners/walkers.
