HI Tom, Quint, Taylor, Chuck, and Dave!
This is Gary "Rich" Richardson. I was "sentenced" to the Oil Lab for most of my time on the "Ol' Jolly J" Remember BT1 Jerry Wade? He "retired" in Subic on my last West Pac. That BT Punch probably did come from Tony Bower! I was stationed with him and "BTCM you know who" at NTC while awaiting my medical discharge in 87' He actually toned it down a little before he retired. His first wife passed away and he remarried and moved to Temecula. I haven't seen Tony Bower since I got out. On second thought, it might have been "Chooch" that gave him that punch. Remember when him and Tony got stabbed in Hawaii?
I saw Nelson Mobley a few times, he worked on Johnston Atoll for a company that destroyed Nerve Gas and he stopped in about twice a year for a while. Leo Zech and Larry "Little O" Owens still live here in San Diego. We get together about three or four times a year and go fishing. We have a "Braggin' Rights" trophy that we pass back and forth for the biggest fish. Jim Tarbert and I work for the City of San Diego, he's with Streets Division and I'm a Maintenance Planner for Metropolitan Wastewater. I see him maybe three or four times a year too. My wife and I have lived on our boat here in San Diego for the last 15 years or so, we’ll probably move ashore this year.
I ran into MM3 Maxwell (?) a few years back, he had his own Janitor Service back then. MR1 Estaban also works for the city. Quint has dropped in a couple of times. BTC Brown worked for the City for a while and retired back to Arkansas (I believe). John Pfau was without a doubt the nicest guy on board. He was in the reserves and I saw him maybe three times while I was waiting on my Medical Discharge at NTC. I was on light duty there for about six months. Remember when I broke my ankle trying to catch Jim Tarbert when he fell down the aft, port ladder from the Helio-deck? That injury finally put me out of the Navy. Remember all of those long hours steaming the plant with no recognition? "The BTCM" and I were the only certified Oil Kings on my last West Pac so you know who did the mid-watches and fuel x-fers! Well believe it or not, while I was at NTC I got a NAM for painting a stairwell! Not only that but my C.O. made me come back (two days after my discharge) in uniform and cleanly shaved for the presentation! Wait it gets even better... SHE threw me a going away party at Chuck's Inn in National City too! Free beer and all the chicken gizzards ya could eat!
Remember BT2 "Louie Louie" Santelies? (spelling)
He's still around here and I see him from time to time. He lost two of his sons and he's had a pretty rough time of it. I hear that BT1 Adams is still around too. I talked to BT1 Ennis on the phone a couple of times before I lost track of him. I hear that Nelson Mobley is livin' the good life on a farm back in Arkansas. I guess Bob Fischer has moved back to Tennessee by now, I saw him a few times after I got out. Leo and I ride our Harleys together about every other weekend. I’ve seen a few other guys over the years and I hope that you guys make it to the 2006 reunion here in San Diego.
Drop me a line sometime guys!
