We definitely steamed together. I knew, or at least recall, all of those names. John Pfau was one of the nicest guys I ever met. Truth is, I do not think he belonged in the NAV but I truely did credit his fortitude and strength. He was a person that always looked upward and forward. I saw the XO (the huge guy before Heyward got there)whack him with a shalele' on wog day 'thinking' the bulge in the back of his pants was an unbroken egg. It turned out his egg was not that of a chicken. John was upset and confused (not to mention in extreme pain for a while) but took it in stride. What a guy. I remember the day we pulled into San Diego on 14 MAY 1983 after a 8 1/2 month WESTPAC and John P - FAU (as we used to call him), had a dozen or so family members on the pier carrying signs...one that read 'ET SAY'S "JOHN PFAU COME HOME" . Wish we all had families like that.
I am thinking the neanderthal that nailed you with the BT punch was a guy named BT2 Bower. He thrived on that sort of stuff. Big barrel chested blonde guy, maybe. Their was indeed a Decker in B division (he and I were close bud's) but he was far from huge and he worked in the forward fireroom.
I recall Scott Luckenbill spending most of his time as logroom yoeman...a good 'man' for the job. He was too honest to be a snipe.
I remember Greg Simpson as a 'real texan' boot camp coming aboard...kind of a Drew Carey looking guy but as red as bass blood. Standing SP in Subic one night I ran across him laying on the street in front of the B-29 restaurant/barbershop there at the Magsaysay/Rizal intersection dead to the world. Come to find out he fell...yes fell...out of the FTN bar above the restaurant and decided to sleep there for awhile. His BCG spectacles were still on thanks to the strap he always wore. He also had a pint of that nasty 'white castle' whiskey they have over there on his person. He was the only guy I ever saw scarf down a 'wog' breakfast and request more.
MM2 Baker and I were not necessarily 'good friends' but it seems we always ended up in each others presence overseas and just by coincidence took many a liberty launch or liberty route back to the ship together. Once in the PI a buddy (Nelson Mobley I believe it was) and I literally found Baker 'asleep' outside the 'Apple Club' on MAGSAYSAY DRIVE on the way back to Jouett one morning. I think liberty expired at noon. We carried Baker back with us, as any good shipmate would do, and got screwed by BTCM Nichols because we were 10 minutes late...typical shit. I almost went to mast over that one but thankfully, the rest of the command felt the same contempt for BTCM we regular snipes did and it got 'dropped'.
I still need to hunt down my 82-83 cruise book. I know I have it but locating it may be a different issue. I'll keep you posted. Much thanks for the correspondence.
