John. I had already left the ship when this occurred, however, myself and 2 other shipmates recently visited with Captain Hayes (1st commanding officer) and, as he recalls, this event took place the day after the change of command ceremony. He went down to the naval base to see the ship off and then went to Point Loma to watch her go to sea. He took pictures and told us that it was one of his saddest moments to watch the ship that he had brought to life and into commission go to sea without him.
I was one of the Plankowners and the memories of my time aboard are priceless. Thanks for the kind words for the ship.
