Re: my father"
I was his Division Officer, the ship's First Lieutenant, in 1982-83. This was during your Dad's second tour on Jouett. I believe he reported aboard in 1981 after having gotten out of the Navy for a while. He was a tremendous leader among First Division. We had some young sailors who hadn't figured out what they wanted to do, some more veteran sailors who had difficulty staying out of trouble, and just a couple of petty officers who provided strong deck seamanship experience. He was one of the latter. Experience or not, he had a rough time as we were leaving Pearl Harbor to continue on to the Western Pacific. The ship had been in port for a few days, and when we left the CO called a General Quarters drill to shake out the cobwebs. Both of us had GQ stations on the bridge. When he put on his helmet, a HUGE cockroach ran down from his helmet, and BM3 did a dance and said a lot of words. The bug was harmless, but a major surprise. Please feel free to contact me at heinbau(at)comcast(dot)net or ra_heinbaugh(at)att(dot)net. Your Dad was a very good sailor and shipmate. Rick Heinbaugh, CDR, USNR, Ret
