Posted by Jeff on 21/5/2003, 5:17 pm By John Hamon NEWPORT player-manager Steve Tate is certainly not resting during the summer months, as he tries to build a successful squad for next season. Following on from signing Taffy Richardson from Lymington and New Milton, Tate has added Glen Howes, an Island lad who has been playing for Basingstoke in the Rymans Premier Division for the past two years. "Glen is only 21 and is an attacking midfielder," said Tate. "He had three years on Southampton's books and is a really exciting prospect and the supporters at St George's Park will take him to their hearts. "Glen will fit nicely into my plans alongside the likes of Simon Pilcher, Gareth Keeping and Taffy." "I have had a look at Wayne Crutcher, who is dominant central defender and Kevin Gill, who is currently training with AFC Bournemouth," said Tate. "However, if he is not offered a contract by the Division 3 play-off finalists, he will come to St George's Park." Two players who have left Newport are Danny Rofe and former Portsmouth and Aston Villa striker Guy Whittingham. Tate said: "We offered Danny good terms but there was no way we could match those of Eastleigh and the lad has joined them. "I wish him and Guy, who has gone to Newbury as manager, all the very best."
