Posted by Greg on 1/6/2005, 1:21 pm, in reply to "NEW to Flint" I am so glad you wrote our message board. My name is Greg, and I work/volunteer at the LGBT Center at UM Flint. The first thing I want to tell you is... come up to our office!!! We want to meet you! We don't have a lot of people coming in here as we have in the past, especially women, and we want more people here! Besides, it's always nice to make new friends, right? (*nudge nudge). We are a lot of fun, really nice, and if you are worried about coming out on campus, we are very discreet. No worries there. If you're not worried, even better! As for stuff to do, tonight (and every Thursday night) starting at seven. I am always there (I will probably be a few minutes late, though because I have class until 6.45pm). There is going to be a messege on here in a few minutes about what's going on tomorrow. It's a movie night. Always fun and relaxing. It is at the Good Beans Cafe' on the corner of Grand Traverse and 1st ave. Only five minutes away from campus. Also, the Good Beans is just a nice place to relax any other time, and the drinks and food are phenomenal. As for bars, hmm... Flint is not the biggest social city in Michigan, but we do have some nice places. First of all, there is a mainly lesbian bar called The Zoo, on Saginaw St between Atherton and Hemphill. Very close by on Hemphill between Saginaw and (I believe) I-475 is another bar, Pachyderm. It mainly attracts gay men, but lots of people go to it. It is nice for just relaxing and playing pool. They have karaoke some nights, and it has an excellent Caesar salad. Another gay bar that has been around for years is the State Bar, on Dort Hwy. I personally do not go there much, but it is an option. It seems nice from the few times that I have been there. Finally, the gay dance club of Flint- Club Triangle. This is on Dort Hwy, as well, and for Flint isn't too bad. I go there relatively often. It's fun, and you can meet all sorts of interesting people there. I highly suggest you check it out. And don't forget, there are always "straight" clubs around the area. Just because you are LBT, doesn't mean you can't enjoy non-gay atmospheres (but we always encourage supporting your local LGBT establishments Any other questions? Feel free to write back up here, or even better give us a call at (810) 766-6606. We run the office almost exclusively by student volunteers, so office hours vary, but you can leave a message. Besides, someone is usually here to answer the phone at some point in the day. The very very best thing you could do, though, is to stop in and see us. We have lots of other resources and personal knowledge that you can use. Well, I hope you stop in to see us. Even the LGBT night at The Good Beans Cafe' is a great place to meet us (and lots of other great people). See you around, Greg
