: Turkish?

The -kis is, I believe, a Greek suffix, so we are looking at "kota" as a possible Turkish surname. It is indeed possible. "Kotaman" or "kodaman" (influential, big shot) is a prevalent surname in Trabzon on the Black Sea (a bit far from Crete, I know but...). In Turkey, we call blue jeans "blucin" or, more popularly "kot pantalon", the reason being that the person who introduced them was none other than a guy called Muhtesem Kot. When you look in the dictionary, neither "kot" nor kota" exist with any meaning that would make them likely candidates as a surname. But remember, many surnames come from local dialects, slang, or centuries-old family nicknames (because surnames were only introduced in Turkey 1935 onwards) so, keep an open mind, it's a possibility.
