Posted by Herb Tarbous Doing a background check? :-) Well, that is our surname. My extended family and I are the only ones I know of in this country. I actually don't know the exact origin of the name. My grandfather and grandmother came to America in the very early 1900's. They actually came seperately and were apart for several years, during WW I. They lived in Aleppo, Syria, which was predominantly Christian at the time and they belonged to the Armenian Catholic Church in Syria. So I sometimes wonder if it is a shortened Armenian name. Family lore has it that my grandfather, who was around until I was 8, came to America to share in 'the gold was falling from the trees into everyone's hands.' My personal theory is that when he was back in the old country he heard of a place called Monmouth Park Racetrack and headed straight to New Jersey to play the ponies. :-) Thanks for asking.
