Hi Caroline, I just checked Google Turkish and came up with 64,000 hits. Ibish is a not uncommon Turkish surname. Ibish is a character in the shadow puppet theatre of Hacivat and Karagoz. It is also probably a slangly familiar abbrev of Ibrahim. But remember, Turks only took surnames in 1935. Does this fit with anything? Cheers, Graham

: Dear Carolyn,
: There is a word like ibis in Türkish
: language. It is pronounced like
: "ibisch" and written with a hook
: underneath "s".
: I can't say if your family name is somehow
: related with this word in our language. I
: think it is a short form of
: "Ibrahim" (a name), but mostly
: used in slang, with the meaning "fool,
: sappy, muddleheaded, funny person".
: Regards
: Dogu
