Dear Carolyn,
There is a word like ibis in Türkish language. It is pronounced like "ibisch" and written with a hook underneath "s".
I can't say if your family name is somehow related with this word in our language. I think it is a short form of "Ibrahim" (a name), but mostly used in slang, with the meaning "fool, sappy, muddleheaded, funny person".
