John Freely in his book The Bosphorus (Redhouse Press, 1993) writes that in Üsküdar, Istanbul, there is a Crimean War Cemetery, where, in addition to the British Soldiers who died during the Crimean War & the Gallipoli campaign, the members of the British Community in Istanbul are also buried. He states that the graves of the British civilians date back to the 1st half of the 19th century. For more information, you may want to contact the British Embassy in Istanbul.
: I am trying to locate information about my
: wife's WATSON relatives who lived in
: Constantinople from at least 1846 until at
: least 1874. Julian Adolphus WATSON (b. Malta
: 1814)was married Mary STEPHENS in the British
: Consulate, Constantinople in 1846 and died
: there in 1863. He was a ship broker and
: merchant. Julian and Mary had a number of
: children born in the city, including my
: wife's great grandfather Henry Griffin WATSON
: (b. 1849) who moved to Marseille, France in
: 1874 where he died in 1916. Any help with
: this WATSON family much appreciated, or any
: advice about how to trace further information
: about them in Istanbul would be welcome - in
: particular about where Julian WATSON might be
: buried.
