I know of no such study, though I assume one or two has been done at some point. The closest way to determine "exactly" what a plant needs would be to measure it's evapotranspiration rate. If you'd like to find out more I suggest you contact the horticulture or agriculture departments at your local universities. Hope this helps a little.
