I would recommend the garret ace series, there not only great to start on but there great for full use. My EuroAce lasts 30+ hours on 4 double a batteries. It's EXTREMELY light- I have a GpaX 550 and it was almost twice the price as the ace but the ace does a MUCH better job for detection and the weight difference really helps.
If your in BC then I would go to SMI-Electronics in Langley. There the best, they have a large selection and have been there for 30+ years. They know there stuff and im sure would help narrow down what meets your sons needs. I hope that helps-
