Canada has many by-laws to say what and what not to do with respects to detecting. All heritage sites are off limits.. In Victoria there is a by-law that forbids any activity which breaks the surface of any city park. Meaning, no detecting, not tent pegs..etc...
Best to double check with the local municipality before hand.. and be very vague about who you are or when you are going hunting.. nothing like the locals showing up to see what you dug and to be a pain about everything you do.
