I bought an Garrett ACE250(~$260) firstly because I was on a budget and secondly for what you get it has alot of features that the more expensive units have. I love mine alot on land, beach and fresh water but it sucks in the salt water. If you are willing to pay more its worth it. The higher end whites units are good, have great depth but there is a learning curve to use these machines. If you want to find the goodies go in all metal mode and dig everything. I think you need to get a few more replies from other people. For an all round machine the Tesoro Tiger Shark is good in salt and fresh water and on land. I think MInelab makes another good machine.
