I checked with a magnet and can verify that the tube is brass though the tank baffle it goes through it steel.
I did boil the lantern in dishwasher detergent for several hours. That helped with getting the decayed gasket out, along with a lot of other gunk, but didn't loosen the cap.
Heat and quench has worked really well for me when cleaning out carbonized deposits in pressure stoves and lanterns, but you are probably right that this is corroded brass in the threads.
I don't have a micro-torch, but I'll try heating the neck with a long-neck butane lighter. The nuclear option will remain in reserve for now. Thanks!
