Re: Does anyone know if Dewey made they own lanterns or just rebadged other manufacturers?
Dietz made many versions of lanterns with small detail changes over time, essentially what Willis said, but the Dewey clearly looks to be a Dietz product. I don't have one to look at closely. I said consensus because I still consider it a mystery/oddball lamp, but the Lantern Collector's Newsletter had a piece recently on the Dewey that concluded it was most likely of Dietz origin. I haven't been able to dig-up that issue yet, but it had a lot of information and pictures. The jury is still out on the question of whether Dietz was always faithful to their pledge to always mark Dietz on their lanterns. What I know about Dietz mill lanterns is that their changes occurred on completely different schedules from the mainstream lanterns and sometimes went retro. Thanks for your imput and interest, Steve, there are still lots of puzzling things that happened with lanterns over the years. I would like to see a picture of the top lid if you can post one. It will tell us if the lid/globe retainer is a Dietz.
