I found this lantern at an antique shop in NY State yesterday. The seller had a note with it that stated he bought in in Mt Jewett, Pa. The family there said it was carried by a family member who was a track walker. His job was to inspect the Kinzua bridge after each train crossing to look for loose rails before the next train crossed. The globe is a NYLE & WRR (New York Lake Erie & Western Railroad). I cheked and found that this company built the bridge. Note the interesting reflector that clips onto the lantern. I believe this lantern to be a Dietz Tubular No 1. I put manufacture date between 1870-1875. What is the bump on the right air tube?
