Hi All, The talk about mollasses is inside a lantern is great. Maybe to remove rust from Woodys website might work but to use to burn is impossible. I have spoke to some old timers years ago that worked for the CITY OF LONG BEACH and CAL-TRANS and at one time they even used Diesel to burn in highway lanterns and torches. I have come across a few Long Beach and L.A. lanterns that have a distinct smell inside the tank and if you look inside the tank it still has a brown residue from using diesel. It's like back in the 50's to the early 70's at the gas pump were gasoline had that old smell when they had lead in with gas. A smell I will never forget. Very high octain. V-8 motors that is! This is just some education. I can garrentee that if you have a lantern with a brown film inside the tank they may have put diesel inside to burn. Highway torches give out enough soot and with diesel it must have been like having the fog on the highway. With lanterns and torches being phased out back then they probably didn't empty them. Just like if you had a car that was sitting on the driveway for a number of years the gas will turn into a gel. Lanterns and torches with fuel inside the tank will build up condensation and if not burned will set down at the bottom and start to rust the tank. This is just from expererince and reading about this for years. Think about this. Back then fuel was alot different than now a days. Different fuel laws and regulation have changes big time over the years. I miss the ol' days. Steve.
