tin bottoms in brass lanterns

Hi, I have a question some of you lantern folk might know. Why did they put tin bottoms in most of the lady brass lanterns? The small lanterns that I call lady lanterns. Usually 6" to 8" tall. For example a No.10 Dietz. Anybody know? Thanks,Louis
