I've told you folks before, and I'll say it again. Phosphoric acid. About a 15% solution will do the trick. Where do you get it? Try Ecolab or ZEP. Has to be straight Phos, no Nitric acid blend or you can kiss your lantern goodbye. 18 - 24 hour soak should do it. You'll get a discoleration of the metal (darker), but 0000 steel wool and elbow grease followed up with a linseed oil protective coating makes and antique lantern look very antique and patina develops over time. Not like bead blasting or other invasive restoration techniques. Give it a shot on a rusty old monarch or Blizzard first. I think you'll be impressed with the ease and results.
