Hobson shows the No.0 SSS as 1898-1914 and the No.2 SSS as 1887-1914. The No.2 version is way rare. The 1891 ham catalog, available from lanternnet, shows both as oval or "D" tube hot blasts with either a lift wire style or the thru-fount base-lift style. 1897-1898 would be when they changed to the round tube versions.
That Simmons Liberty certainly has the same tube-wrap bail found later on the Warren STA-LIT. Tube-wrap bails were also used on Canadian lanterns (Banner-GSW) and on older Berger hot blasts. Simmons is one of the few jobbers who liked their own signature parts on the lanterns they ordered and wound up with several odd combinations. Other examples of this show up as personalized fill caps, or in the wood handles used by Shapleigh or the Rayo D ring. BB
