HI Barry, here is a picture of another "transitional TG". It is half early model Dietz and half late model Dietz. Note the late model bail, the late model verticals (with holes to accept the keyed, knobless burner adjustment ), a knobed burner, but an early Dietz cover latch mechanism.
I am thinking that back then these were simply utility lamps, not works of art. It would not have made much sense to implement cost reduction changes and then scrap inventory of older materials still in stock if it could still be used.
