On wood furniture, a japan finish is multi-layers of lacquer - very smooth and opaque. I'm sure you have seen it.
On metal, a japanned finish is a single coat of tinted clear lacquer that dries to a semi-transparent gloss finish, usually blue or black, that is comparable to gun bluing. BB
