I've been playing with POR-15 for the last few days. It has it's good and it's bad points.
On the railing that I am doing, the stuff soaks in to any surface rust like WD-40. I am fairly convinced that it ate it's way down to the solid metal and will stay put indefinitely.
On the lantern, well, I think that it will protect it for many years to come. However, I would not brush POR-15 onto a valuable piece that I was restoring. It runs, and it bubbles. The top-coat will hopefully make it look better but the starting point is less than perfect.
As a side note, when you begin painting, the fuel cap wants to be in place to keep the POR-15 out of the threads and so that you can coat the cap as well. After a 1/2 hour or so, remove the cap and put it someplace else to let the stuff harden. I had this strange feeling a couple hours after I put the POR-15 on that I should maybe remove the cap and found that it was stuck fairly tight. I got it out, but by morning it would have been stuck there for eternity.
If weather permits, I'll be putting the green top coat on tomorrow. I have "before" pictures and will post them and the "after" pictures soon.
Rick
