I had an email exchange with Woody Kirkman a while back about wicks. It seems that he normally carries genuine Dietz brand wick (with the red stripe down the middle). Sometimes he runs out and substitutes a different brand. I guess it makes sense to do this to help the customer out, as any wick is better than no wick.
I ordered a roll of Dietz "Red Stripe" wick from Woody. The genuine "Dietz Red Stripe" is around .084 thick. That groups right up there with the thickest that I have been able to locate.
While there are at least 2 other styles of wicks that I have found that measure .084-ish, there are no identifying markings on either of them. I know where I got them from, but if they change manufacturers I would not know that untill I got them. It would be best to ask questions before buying any large quantity of wicks of unknown origin.
The only brand of wick I have found to date that is readily identifiable is the Dietz "Red Stripe", which so far I have only found to be available at Kirkman's. If ordering any large quantity of "Red Stripe" for an Adlake or Dietz railroad style burner, it would be wise to specify "no substituions" to avoid getting a less optimum wick.
