I was squishing new burners down onto new wicks tonight and noticed something. If you squish down a burner onto a new, dry wick, you might think it is squished down far enough if you stop just as it seems to be getting snug. Try it there, but if you still see flicker, take it out, retrim the wick while is is wet, and recheck the fit.
It looks like a dry wick fuzzes out a bit on the end and need extra clearance to fit thru the burner slot. Once it is well saturated it does not fuz out, so there is extra clearance all of a sudden that may require some extra squishing to make it burn nicely.
It is amazing to me that this matters so much. Just a tiny bit of extra space beyond minimum needed clearance to work smoothly makes it burn yucky.
A special offer, for the first two people that are interested in duplicating my experiments in an Adlake burner, and willing to post their results here... email me your postal mailing address (rick AT lioby DOT com ) and I will send you a couple of free thin and thick wicks to play with.
