Thank you guys for the correspondence. I am wondering if I should attempt to take the black off of my deck lantern. It does look like it was applied at the factory, although I can see the brass underneath where there are (a very few) scratchs in the paint. Except for the magnifying lenses inside the Banner having a crack, both lanterns are in excellent condition right now. There are no stress cracks or dings, and the globes are both original with no chips or cracks. It appears that neither of these lanterns were ever used. I did throw the old wick out from the deck lantern a few years ago though. Would it be a better idea to just leave the black on the lantern, if it is original?
