Hi Rummona... I also recently aquired one of thise Universal Brass Deck Lanterns. It has been bead blasted... making it look nice and brassy, but giving a surface texture that resembled cheap gold spray paint. The globe has a crack in it, the fount had a stress crack in it, and the wire cage solder joints to the base were all cracked.
I solder the wires back tot he cage (it didn't look as pretty as the original solder job), I coated the inside of the fount with fuel tank sealer, and I spent a bit ot time polishing out the bead blast finish.
I think if I polish it about 20 more times the brass may start to look nice.
I have lit it and the globe so far has held together. Woody Kirkman told me that he should be reproducing deck latnern globes in a couple of months, so I will retire the original and replace it when that happens.
Being a dead flame design, it does not burn anywhere near as smoothly as any of my Dietz Vesta's. However, it is pretty cool looking and I am sure there is some history behind it. If it could talk, it would be an interesting story.
