Posted by Kurt Maurer on 9/19/2006, 9:51 pm I say that in salute to Edward Mason, who I hope is getting along okay these days. Anyway, here's a photo of two Dietz No 39 Steel Clads. The one with the more typical wire bail I bought recently for $10 because I wanted the globe for the other one, which is in much better shape. It was a bargain price at any rate, though, as the fount and burner are in great condition... the rest of it you can see in the photo, perhaps. I notice all sorts of differences between these two old hands, starting with the most obvious features, the bails. Then, the horizontal wires in the cages. Anyone have any comments? I really don't know a lot about this particular lantern. The one with the flat steel bail (on the left) is stamped "City Of New York." The globe is embossed with "Vulcan", along with the Dietz logo, etc. They both should(?) have burners stamped "Dietz Convex", and one does. The shroud, or whatever you call it, that carries that stamping, is missing on one of 'em. I just noticed the difference while composing this post, and now know to look for the little tell-tale slots of a missing peice on a burner. I've only been collecting since the late '60's, but still learn something new every day (hey, I'm into tubulars!). I could research this a bit, but truth is, I'm busy doing other things at the moment. Also figured this board could use a little "work". :-) My hope is that someone will have some fun answering my question, while I can be really happy to learn the results. By golly, while hitting the 'Preview' button for this post, I just noticed the difference in the flame adjusters. It's a wheel on the "defunct" burner, and wire loop on the intact Dietz Convex example (right). Hmmm???? Be happy to provide close-up pix if you're really into this... Cheers, Kurt
