help with building a truck

I got my self a 1972 chevy 2wd I wanted to make a pull truck to play with here at our local fairs. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction, as far as building a truck, and the rules and what not of Ca. Any help would be great ! Thanks Landon4421
