Brady I would say it depends on the dog. @ hrs old is not that old and I would think that yes it should have been able to follow it longer. But it really depends on the dog and what type of training you have done. I like to practice on tracks longer and older than I expect to actually track. My dog also works better on older tracks than fresher like 2 hrs old. She seems to concentrate better on the line.
For your track the deer could have doubled back or turned and your dog not have picked it up. I would just work on some training lines that were over night or even 24 hrs old with very minimul blood. Also you might look into tracking shoes to train with little or no blood.
