I have a 3 year old dauschand male who has been tracking since he was 6 months old. He has found numerous deer but seems to struggle on cold trails. Saturday i put him on a trail, where a guy had shot a buck almost straight on with a 243. 85 grain ballistic tip. he said when the deer ran off it was dragging his left leg. I told him sounds like he pulled and hit shoulder and no cavity. we found some blood for about a hundred yards, then it stopped, my dog seemed to stay on the trail for another 200 yds or so then lost it. My question is is that about a normal distance for a dog to stay on the track and loose it or should my dog have been able to track the scent for a much greater distance. There was no exit wound very little blood, and the trail was 2 hours old.
