Start him on lead. This way you can correct him anytime he gets off track. You also will be in a better potition to read the dog to tell how he is trackng. What state are you in? Are youplanning on letting the dog free search later on? If so some things to consider about that. If the animal is not mortally wounded the dog will follow it a long way and possably off your property. If it gets off your property then you take the risk of someone shooting the dog. Also you will not have a way to stop him if he gets off track and starts following a fresh track. Are you also training your DD in the other diciplines, pointing retrieving?
Just a few things to consider.
