Ike,
You said "I saw John's book and he did not recommend them for those reasons." I don't think it is a correct statement. What John says is that it has to be a right beagle. Right now one of the most successful blood tracking dogs in the history of Deer Search is Tim Nichols Mickey, who is a beagle. Mickey has found well over a hundred wounded deer in his carrer. But Mickey is old and when Tim wanted to raise his replacement he tried several beagles and was not satisfied. There are many types of beagles - brace beagles, small pack option, hare hounds and so on. It is important that you start with an intelligent hound that has a medium speed and does not get hung up on checks the way brace beagle do. A beagle will always have a love for rabbits but if you start to train a puppy when he is very young and you stress blood tracking, he might end up to be an excellent tracker.
If you want to e-mail me privately, I can give you a phone number for Tim, who is probably most experinced when it comes to beagles.
