I have a 1 1/2 year old airedale terrier (strong hunting bloodline). I have been laying out blood trails and he is doing well.
I shot a deer yesterday and the deer ran about 70 yards and dropped. There was a heavy blood trail. When hit, the deer run upwind, then turned (cross wind). I stayed in my stand for another 45 minutes and saw 2 deer cross the blood trail. I figured it would be go training, so I got my dog and put him on the blood trail (on a lead).
My dog got real "gamey" and was scenting and following the blood trail. About half way to the deer, he put his nose in the air and ran right to the deer. He showed no interest in the fresh scent, only the blood. I was pleased about that.
Is it ok, the way he found the deer? If not, what should I do? In training I lay hot dogs along the blood trail, but he is so interested in the blood, he never eats the hotdogs.
