I have a lab that is 6 years old. He had very little ball drive up to almost a year old. He became excited and developed a drive through paced repetition and priase. Once I was able to establish a good drive, there has been nothing he is unwilling to learn. We began with hunting (dove, snipe & ducks)and when he was about 3 years old, I put him through a police K-9 Shcool where he was certified top of his class in tracking. I believe that high drive is the key to a successful dog.
Next time you take your's out to play (not work)
let him wander off and then you slip away and "hide". Your pup is going to find you. Eventually incorporate family members holding his favorite toy walking a track while he watches (harnessed). As soon as the tracklayer gets out of sight and hides, put your dog on the track. When found, have the TRACKLAYER really praise up the pooch. This little exercise helped my agency K-9 unit get some motivation out of our dogs. Good Luck
